چکیده

Early experiments on iconic memory suggested that people initially experience a detailed visual image but can report only a few cued items. We hypothesized that strong top down predictions would allow for visual experience of only task relevant information. In a change detection task we manipulated the appearance of visual stimuli in the critical part of the experiment by removing up to 70

Top-down directed attention to stimulus features and attentional allocation to bottom-up deviations.

One highly controversial issue with respect to visual selective attention concerns the degree to which the top-down attentional mechanism modulates attentional allocation to bottom-up deviation. We investigated whether top-down directed attention to a stimulus feature modulates attentional allocation to task-irrelevant, bottom-up deviation. The P3 event-related potential was measured as an elec...

A physiological correlate of the "Zoom Lens" of visual attention.

Attending a certain region in space enhances activity in visual areas retinotopically mapped to this region; stimuli presented in this region are preferentially processed. The zoom lens model of visual attention proposes that the attended region can be adjusted in size and predicts a tradeoff between its size and processing efficiency because of limited processing capacities. By means of event-...

A Model of Salient Region Detection

Attention as a selective gating mechanism is often compared to a spotlight (Posner 1980; Treisman and Gelade 1980), enhancing visual processing in the attended (" illuminated ") region of a few degrees of visual angle (Sagi and Julesz 1986). In a modification to the spotlight metaphor, the size of the attended region can be adjusted depending on the task, making attention similar to a zoom lens...

Bottom-up influences on visual attention in a top-down search task

What exactly controls our gazing behaviour when we look at visual stimuli? We presume that some objects are more salient then others, which means that they have a more striking appearance against the background. It is known that these salient objects can influence our gazing behaviour, this uncontrolled effect is called bottom-up. The effect competing with bottom-up control is top-down behaviou...

SUN: Top-down saliency using natural statistics.

When people try to find particular objects in natural scenes they make extensive use of knowledge about how and where objects tend to appear in a scene. Although many forms of such "top-down" knowledge have been incorporated into saliency map models of visual search, surprisingly, the role of object appearance has been infrequently investigated. Here we present an appearance-based saliency mode...
